How to Make a Silk Bookmark as a Gift

If you have friends who love real books, you are sure to love this tutorial! We all know that bookmarks can be made from a wide variety of materials and in countless ways. But today, I want to share an interesting way to make a delicate, stylish, and elegant bookmark from truly unusual materials. You can be certain that such a lovely piece will make a wonderful gift for any occasion.

For this project, we will use:
• a cut of black satin ribbon, 8-9 cm longer than the size of the book;
• a cut of lilac ribbon for decorating the bookmark;
• scissors;
• a lighter;
• a cut of silk fabric;
• round-nose pliers;
• gelatin;
• super glue;
• needle, beading line;
• synthetic thread;
• jewelry pin and beads, seed beads;
• double-sided tape;
• metal clip (you can use a new one or take one from an old pair of suspenders).

Step 3

To keep the silk fabric from losing its appeal and fraying during crafting and subsequent use, the material must be treated with a gelatin solution. To do this, add 2 teaspoons of edible gelatin to 200 grams of water and let it swell. Then heat it up, but do not bring it to a boil. Dip the piece of fabric into the hot solution and hang it up or lay it flat to dry.

Step 4

After this procedure, the silk fabric will feel like paper. Cut a strip of fabric from the material, equal in length to the book.

Step 5

Fold the edges of the piece toward the wrong side just enough so that the width of the silk strip becomes slightly narrower than the satin ribbon.

Step 6

Trim the edges of the satin ribbon and seal them using a lighter. Do everything carefully so as not to damage the ribbon.

Step 7

Using double-sided tape, attach the silk piece onto the satin ribbon. It is important to leave up to 8-9 cm at one end.

Attach the metal clip to the end where the edge of the satin ribbon aligns with the edge of the silk strip.

Fold the opposite end of the satin ribbon in half and tape it down (folding it over toward the front side) using double-sided tape.

Step 10

Wind the synthetic thread around your hand (approximately 200-220 turns).

Thread a strand through the center at the top and secure it—this is the center of the tassel. Slide the wound thread off your hand and cut it across the center on the opposite side. Stepping down a few millimeters from where the threads were tied, secure the base of the tassel.

Grasp the pin and insert it through the center of the tassel.

To decorate the top, string seed beads onto the beading line, form a ring, and tie it off.

Next, string one larger seed bead onto the needle at a time and pass it under the line through every third bead of the first row. Then pass between the gaps of the second row, continuing in this way until the entire top of the tassel is covered.

Slide a bead onto the pin.

Using round-nose pliers, form a loop at the end of the pin and attach it to the clip.

Twist a small rose from the lilac ribbon, stitching its base by hand.

And glue it to the lower part of the bookmark (the end opposite the clip).
