Two Ways to Crochet a Flat Circle with Charts

Beginners will find it helpful to learn how to crochet a flat, even circle without puckering or losing its shape. The finished samples look slightly different because each method places the increases differently.

Method 1

This method creates a circle with wedge-shaped increase sections. Make a chain of 8 stitches and work single crochet stitches around it. In Round 2, work an increase in every stitch. Follow the chart for the remaining rounds until the circle reaches the desired diameter. This method is often used for hats and berets.

Method 2

This method creates an even circle without visible wedges. Work the sample in double crochet. The fabric is more open and less dense, and the transitions between rounds form distinct, even rings. It works well for decorative projects and individual motifs.

Both methods can be worked in one color or several colors by alternating between yarns.
