Garter Stitch Scarf: 5 Ways to Wear It

Most knitters started learning to knit with scarves—and the simplest ones at that, worked in garter stitch. You'd think there wouldn't be much to them beyond bundling up in cold weather. Think again! With just a few small tweaks, your favorite scarf can easily transform into a very stylish accessory. See for yourself.
1. Scarf with a closure.

Its standout feature is its wedge-shaped edge. Start with 3 stitches, increasing after the first and before the last edge stitch. The number of increases depends on how wide you want the scarf to be. Knit all rows. Finish the piece in reverse order, decreasing after the first and before the last stitch. Crochet a loop for the closure.
2. Scarf-vest.

It measures 50–60 cm wide and is knit straight. Drape it over your shoulders and fasten it with a decorative pin.
3. Playful scarf with pom-poms

Start and finish knitting as in Version 1, but with one twist. About 20 cm from the edge, divide the work into 2 parts and knit the right and left halves separately (to create a slit), then slip all stitches back onto 1 needle and knit straight in garter stitch. Embellish with pom-poms.
4. Scarf with trim

For the trim, crochet a band from contrasting yarn. Thread it through 2 strands down the center of the piece and tie it in a bow, gathering both halves together.
5. Scarf-wrap

Sew the finished piece along the short side, gather it, and attach a decorative flower. You can also use a brooch, satin ribbon, or a pretty pin.
