Children's Knitted Scarf with Stripes and Tassels

You might wonder what new ideas could possibly be found when knitting a scarf for a child? In this design, I was drawn to the unconventional crochet edging around the entire perimeter.

Knit the scarf with yarn in two colors. Use knitting needles and a crochet hook suited to the yarn thickness.
Cast on 50 sts and work standard 1x1 ribbing for 18 rows. Change the working yarn color and work 6 rows. Then return to the first color and work 8 more rows.

Change yarns again, work 2 rows, then 8 more rows in the first color. Repeat this alternating color stripe sequence once more.
Next, work the main length of the scarf in the first color. To finish, work a mirror image of these stripes.

Now take the crochet hook and edge the scarf with the second yarn color.

For decoration, cut 12 cm lengths of the second yarn color. Each tassel bundle requires 5 strands.
Using a crochet hook, pull the bundles through the stitches of the edge row and tie a knot. Attach the tassels at equal intervals along the edge of the scarf.
