I have a sole with white inserts. How can I remove stains to get it back to white, or paint it so the stains aren't visible? The upper is leather and raincoat fabric. The lining is fabric and leather.

Log inI re-read your tips and remembered how I tried a lot of tips on my own shoes. I once bought white New Balances, and with mesh too... and white leather sneakers. The scale of the problem, I think, is understandable to the experienced... :D
Method with whitening toothpaste - works, but does not bleach the sole to a snow-white state, however, it improves the overall look. Takes a loooong time to clean.
Method with bleach - works, but then the sneakers stink for a very long time and the sole becomes more brittle.
Method with vinegar and nail polish remover (one to one) - works! It wipes off dirt very easily. Do not apply to fabric - it will eat the paint.
I also know a very unusual and surprisingly working method for a loose sole (not smooth rubber, although you can try it on that too). Two tablespoons of milk + one tablespoon of starch. Mix and apply to the rubber, avoiding fabric details. Leave for 10-15 minutes.
Loose sole – what is that, like with treads/embossing? Unusual method with starch, I haven't even heard of such a thing. I'll have to try it, thanks for the tip 😍 Here on the forum, someone once advised washing kitchen towels with a tablespoon of vegetable oil – it worked very well 👍 Now I'm not afraid of strange tips ))

It is more difficult to remove stains from smooth ones if they have already soaked in. The same grass.

If the contamination is not very stubborn (like grass, coffee, wine), try to bleach the sole with micellar water. Soak a cotton pad abundantly and wipe. I didn't believe it myself until I decided to try!
I have Garnier micellar water (pink bottle) and Green Way. Both are good both for their intended purpose and for cleaning any stains. For economy, I use the latter (it costs 30 UAH for a half-liter jug!). 🙂
