Grid Paper Drawing for Kids: Simple Creative Ideas
If your child is finishing kindergarten or starting first grade, drawing on grid paper can be a relaxed way to practise pencil control and handwriting. It combines play and learning without a handwriting workbook. All you need is grid paper and a pencil or pen. Choose age-appropriate drawing materials, and help younger children use them. The squares make it easier to follow straight and diagonal lines while enjoying the process.
The simplest figures are a good place to start; children can choose rockets or any subject they like. Counting squares as they draw can add a little number practice. Colour the finished pictures with markers or coloured pencils.

Here are some slightly more involved drawings. For these, practise diagonal lines of different lengths from left to right and back again. Imagination will suggest plenty of pictures of your own.

That is all! Children may be happy to try these little exercises. My own children loved them, and my younger daughter, now in Year 5, still fills a separate notebook with whole grid-paper pictures.

My daughter's diary margins are covered in patterns like these 🙂
